Crews stock salt and prepare for freezing rain

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – North Carolina Department of Transportation crews at the Division of Highways are preparing for freezing rain and ice on the roads in Bladen and Columbus Counties.

The cement storage units at the Columbus County Division of Highways hold up to 750 tons of salt. DOT crews used 600 tons of salt during the last winter storm. Currently, they have 225 tons of salt left so they are not up to their full capacity.

DOT crews sent trucks to Wilmington to pick up more salt throughout the day.

"We used a lot of salt," said Drew Cox, District Engineer, "we don't think this event will be quite as cold so that's why we're confident we'll be ok with this."

Ice is the big concern for the DOT. They spent the day treating the bridges with brine solution, a mixture of water and salt that reacts with freezing rain, so ice does not stick on the roads.

"We have a good plan, our folks are experiences and I hope we are able to get out and do a good job for the citizens of these counties," said Cox.

Crews will begin to salt primary roads on Highway 74.
