4 Chesterfield officers on administrative assignment after shooting

Posted: Updated:
CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

Chesterfield police say a man pointed a pistol at his wife and later at police, leading to an officer-involved shooting.

Police shot Robert Murphy, who is now in the hospital. Murphy is expected to face charges for the crimes. The incident happened on Pocono Drive in Chesterfield.

Neighbors say the quarrel started at his home, that the wife got nervous when he started waiving a pistol at her. A source says Robert Murphy's wife went running to a neighbor's house crying for help in her nightgown and slippers, saying Murphy was threatening to shoot her with a pistol.

Neighbors say police swarmed the neighborhood, Murphy came out of the home waiving a pistol, and police warned him several times to put it down, before firing.

Neighbors say it's not the first time police have been at the home.

"I know that police have stopped by their home before because of domestic situations," said neighbor Betsy Baumeier. "It wasn't surprising that the police were there. It was surprising that there was a shootout."

Police have been called to the 400 block of Pocano Drive five times in the last year. We also uncovered court documents where Murphy was sentenced for drunk driving.

Police say the four officers involved in firing weapons are on administrative assignment right now. That means they're mostly doing desk work until an internal investigation is done.

Murphy is expected to be charged when he gets out of the hospital.
