Suspects break into cars in Hanover, steal valuables

Posted: Updated:
HANOVER, VA (WWBT) -

The Hanover County Sheriff's Office is searching for two women they broke into and stole items from several vehicles in Mechanicsville and Rockville on January 26.

Hanover investigators want to know whether they're connected to a string of similar thefts. They've just released pictures of a second car suspected in the crimes. That's in addition to close-ups of two women suspected of breaking into more than half a dozen cars from Mechanicsville to Rockville - in one day.

"I'm surprised, in Mechanicsville," said Maggie Scott.

Deputies say the women started in the 6300 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike. The thieves hit two parked cars making off with purses in the early afternoon.

Then, in just 10 minutes, investigators say the suspect hit another location on Cold Harbor Road, broke into another car but didn't get anything.

They didn't stop there. Detectives say the suspects stole from four more cars in the 16,000 block of Pouncey Tract Road - taking more purses.

"Other valuables were left behind. It appears that the suspects were simply interested in making a quick grab of the purses and then fleeing," Lt. Chris Whitley said.

Now the sheriff's office wants to know if these smash and grabs are connected to a similar Hanover story in December. That's when two people broke into cars near the Gold's Gym off Bell Creek Road and near a YMCA off Rutland Center Boulevard. The suspects also took purses and cell phones. Months later there have been no arrests. So officers are calling on the public for help.

"Often it's the smallest detail that helps us solve these crimes," Whitley said.

"I think it's more about the economic times that were living in…This is usually a pretty safe place," said Stephen Scott.

Investigators say no tip is too small. If you think you know anything contact Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.

Officers remind whenever you park, be sure to remove important valuables or store them out of sight. Also remember to try to park in well lit areas.
