CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A Chesterfield mom is defending her adult son in trouble for allegedly sleeping with a 13-year-old girl. 19-year-old Rakeesh Brown has been charged with carnal knowledge of a child and using a computer to solicit a minor.
Patricia Brown claims, the alleged victim told her son she was 16. She says, Rakeesh Brown met the 13-year-old through Facebook.
"He had no idea she wasn't sixteen," said the suspect's mom. "I think she needs to come forward and tell the truth. She told him she was sixteen."
According to NBC12 legal analyst Steve Benjamin, it doesn't matter if she lied.
"The law requires you have got to make certain that the person you're having sexual intercourse with is age appropriate and if you've got any doubt about it you shouldn't do it," said Benjamin.
According to investigators, that online relationship turned into sex. When the minor's parents found out, they called Chesterfield police.
If he's found guilty, Brown could serve up to 10 years in prison and must register as a sex offender.
However, if it comes out that the minor did lie about her age Benjamin says, that's a factor the prosecutor can take into consideration in what to charge or what penalty to recommend or impose.
We couldn't reach out to the minor because her name isn't listed anywhere in the court documents because of her age.
Brown isn't allowed to contact her and is due in court later this month.
