Chesterfield Boys and Girls Club closing

Posted: Updated:
CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

It's a safe place for students after school, but we've learned Chesterfield's only Boys and Girls Club will close its doors next month for good. The club is located at Falling creek Middle School, right on Hopkins Road.

Officials with the program say there just aren't enough children participating, and there isn't enough funding. The program has been open in Chesterfield more than 10 years.

8-year-old Gerrod Johnson goes tot he club, and says he likes doing worksheets and playing games with friends.

"Uno.....Monopoly," the 8-year-old explained.

The Boys and Girls Club's mission is to provide better programs to help young people succeed- with a focus on life skills, homework, and manners.

" They are reasonable," Laquita Strange, Gerard's grandmother said of the program. "The cost in keeping even one child in a daycare is expensive. And if you're a single parent it can be very expensive to try to do that."

But now, these children will need to find somewhere else to go. Because the Falling creek Location is closing, the families of 17 students will need to find a new place for their kids to go after school.

"A a lot of the daycares and after school programs are filled," said Strange. "So, you're just hoping there's someplace that will take him!"

The clubs say they're shifting the way they do business, to serve bigger groups of kids- about 60 to 70 at a time.

They also say the funding just isn't' there for this club.
