Friend of crash victims call for changes on Route 33 in Hanover

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) -

Traffic was backed up for miles along Route 33 Saturday afternoon due to a fiery crash that sent three people to the hospital. 

Two of the men involved in the crash are good friends of Tim Raiford.

"Prince of a guy. He is real gruff, but one of a kind.  We all like him. He's going to be missed for a couple of months at least," Raiford said. He and the two victims would have breakfast every morning with a group of other men. Those plans now change with two members of their breakfast club fighting for their lives.

"Jack is not doing quite as well because of his age. He is up in the years like I am.  JB is several years behind us, but he only had a 30 something percent burns whereas Jack had 50 plus," Raiford said. He says all three of the men are lucky to be alive. Another friend of his who traveled that same route 15 years ago was not as fortunate.

"I lost another friend who was on this highway. Somebody crossed the lane and killed him instantly," recalled Raiford.

Olivia Garber and Katelin Harris both live in front of where Saturday's accident happened. Both agree that major changes are needed along this dangerous stretch of highway.

"I don't think they should have these passing lanes, not as many passing lanes.  It shouldn't be in front of business or houses," Garber said.

State Police and the Hanover Sheriff's Office are still working to find out what may have caused the crash.

    A woman has died, after police say she was struck by a van in Richmond.
