St. Mary's ER waiting room treated for bed bugs

A bed bug scare at a Henrico hospital clears an emergency waiting room.

Officials with Bon Secours tell us that on Saturday, bed bugs were discovered on a patient in the ER at Saint Mary's Hospital.

Other patients were relocated to another part of the hospital while exterminators were brought in to inspect the building.

They're creepy, crawly, and downright disgusting.

So what should you do if you find out that bed bugs may have followed you home? We took those questions to Terry McGann who owns a pest control business.

"A lot of times they will be on your bedding, so you want to look at your bedding real close and the seams and things like that," says McGann of McGann's Termite & Pest Control.

He also says to check your car, and any belongs that you think may be infested. Most importantly McGann says check to your clothes.

McGann says, "If I was at the hospital when I came home, I would have taken all of my clothes and put them into the washer and dryer and that would have solved the problem right there."

Officials with Bon Secours say everyone in the emergency room at Saint Mary's were told about the bed bugs and offered showers. Adults were re-routed to a pediatric unit while exterminators worked for hours to check and treat the waiting room area.

McGann says bed bugs are more common than you think--- he see's more than 50 cases of bed-bugs in homes per week.

"With our society now its just a common occurrence so you always got to keep your eye open... you know you can get them from anywhere," McGann says.

If you have concerns about your home--- do your research and find a reputable pest control company that could provide you with information on bed bug inspections.

The adult emergency waiting room at St. Mary's Hospital was temporarily closed Saturday after it was discovered a patient had bed bugs.

Charlotte Perkins with Bon Secours tells us that patients were re-routed to the pediatric department for four hours on Saturday while hospital staff located a patient with bed bugs.

Perkins says a person was inspected and found to have bed bugs just before 11 a.m. Saturday. She says the entire facility was treated by an exterminator. That work wrapped up around 3 p.m. Saturday.

Perkins tell us everyone inside the waiting room at the time was offered a shower.
