Richmond police investigate violent purse-snatching in Shockoe Bottom

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A Richmond woman is attacked on her way to work and now, police are investigating.

According to investigators, the crime happened around 6:30 Wednesday morning in the 2200 block of Dock Street, in the parking deck for the River Loft Apartments.

A memo was sent out Wednesday afternoon describing what allegedly happened. Richmond police went a step further saying, a woman was attacked while sitting in her car. She was punched in the face by the suspect but she was able to run away.

The suspect got away with her purse and other items from her car.

River Loft resident Victoria Doran left her apartment shortly after the crime allegedly happened.

"That's scary to know that I walked to work just a few hours later," said Doran. "I had no idea and I wish I had heard about it sooner."

That breakdown in communication is nothing new, says Doran, after another crime happened there last summer.

In August 2013, a woman reported to police that she was walking in front of the River Lofts building at the corner of 25th and East Cary Streets when she abducted then sexually assaulted. What's more is that residents weren't notified until nearly a month later.

NBC12 confronted River Loft management at the time. Management told us, they withheld information due to the sensitive nature of the crime.

That excuse still doesn't sit well with people who live here.

"They told us they couldn't reveal anything because it was part of an ongoing investigation," said Doran. "Especially being a young woman, I would've preferred to know about that sooner because that can be really unsafe."

This time, residents were notified within 12 hours of the crime. NBC12 is told that security at the River Lofts community is offering to escort residents to and from their cars 24/7.

Management says in its email to residents, they are fully cooperating with the Richmond Police investigation.

We reached out to management ourselves but the office had already closed for the day.
