VDOT crews working rotating 12-hour shifts ahead of snow storm

VDOT crews are pre-treating roads ahead of the snow storm. Officials are urging you to stay off the roads if at all possible Tuesday.

"This is the biggest event that we've had so far this year," said Lindsay LeGrand with the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Crews are bringing out the heavy machinery ahead of a snow storm that is barreling straight toward Central Virginia.

"We are out all night long," said LeGrand. "We'll have crews reporting for 12 hour shifts around the clock."

Officials are urging motorists to avoid driving if possible.

"It actually helps our crews to be able to clear the roads much faster if they have less traffic to deal with," said LeGrand.

VDOT officials say drivers should use extreme caution on the roads. They say ice will certainly be a factor. Officials showed us a salt dome that contained 1400 tons of salt. Officials expect to clear out the dome in the next two days.

"We have a bunch of crews out," said LeGrand. "Our on call contractors have come out. Our focus is to keep the roads passable."

We also spoke to Dominion Power officials. They do not expect major power outages, but crews are on standby.
