Making the decision on school closings, parents weigh in

We all know what it looks like for the kids, the anticipation and then the sweet victory dance for a snow day!

The grocery stores are bursting with customers, stocking up on the must-haves just hours before the storm hits.

"We're trying to stock up on the necessities and just make sure we have everything so we can stay snug and warm inside and don't have to brave the roads," said Shelly McCabe.

And while the NBC12 weather team is busy crunching numbers, school leaders across the region face some tough decisions of their own- regarding what's best for students.

After two weather events this year, many parents have strong opinions.

"This was the SOL week, so we don't want them to miss that and then have to crunch it in," said TIffany Ford, a Richmond mom. "After the storm you know passes through. I mean, that's more pressure for him because he's already like oh my goodness! It's testing week!"

"Because of the road conditions, you know, bus could have an accident!" said Petersburg mom, Aqueelah Rose. "Kids can be hurt or they can get them to school and then want them to turn around and come back home."

Many weighed in on the NBC12 facebook page, too.

Adrienne Holland Jennings said, "Speaking from experience it's waaayyyyy more chaos with an early release!"

Judy LovestheLord Minor said, "Cancel it!! need to stress folks out with an early dismissal and take a chance on our kids safety...they can always make the day up..but we can't replace lives...;)"
