Dozens of hospital staff sick at St. Francis in Midlothian

MIDLOTHIAN, VA (WWBT) -

Dozens of hospital workers at St. Francis medical center in Midlothian are sick and now an investigation is underway to see if it's Norovirus.

We're told a gastrointestinal bug has spread in the last 48 hours.

Patients, doctors, and nurses are not among the sick – only hospital staff. The symptoms are extremely unpleasant: diarrhea, throwing up, and nausea. About 32 hospital workers called out sick in one day.

And now, St. Francis CEO, Mark Gordon, said crews are frantically working to keep it from spreading.

"We've gone through all of our areas and scrubbed those areas," said Gordon.

After a good scrub, the hospital will be using a couple of TRUD Ultraviolet robots to kill off anything else.

The illness hasn't spread to patient exam rooms - just some surgical areas.

"We had some areas related to the OR's, primarily our pre-op areas," said Gordon.

Like the cold and the flu, one person got sick and it spread.

"It might last 24 to 48 hours, we already know some of those individuals originally had the bug at around 9 o'clock, Thursday night, but by the morning on Friday, they were feeling a lot better, so we expect this to really pass over the weekend," said Gordon.

Gordon shared St. Francis's routine procedure to keep others from getting sick.

"When people enter the hospital, we take every precaution, and make sure that if they have any signs or symptoms of gastrointestinal bug or cold or flu, that they wash their hands that if necessary we offer masks to those individuals entire families, anyone entering the hospital so that we make sure we protect all of our patients," said Gordon.

So by Monday Gordon said things should be back to normal. The health department was notified and we should find out next week, if this really is the Norovirus.
