Report reveals DSS decisions may have compromised safety of children

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Richmond city leaders have just been informed that the Department of Social Services still has a lot of problems.

A new report by the city auditor claims some of the decisions made by the department may have compromised the safety of children. Out of a random 100 closed cases, 66 percent of them were closed inappropriately.

In many of the cases, there should have been more follow ups, additional information, and further investigation. Some of the cases involved unexplained physical injuries to infants that should have been investigated further.

In another case, a report made to the police for a criminal investigation should have been followed up on but wasn't.

So why close these cases when there's more work to be done? The conclusion in this report states that cases were closed inappropriately in order to reduce the number of open cases in the system.

This is a big concern for the public because the Department of Social Services is supposed to protect the most vulnerable citizens - like children and the elderly.
