January 9 RESTAURANT REPORT: customer complains to Health Dept.

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Have you ever seen something dirty or unsafe in a restaurant and wondered what to do? You can report it to the Health Department and they will quickly inspect it.

The Health Department went to a local burger joint after a customer called to complain. The inspection report says they found 4 critical violations, which the restaurant quickly corrected.

The restaurant is What a Burger at 9901 Jefferson Davis Highway in North Chesterfield.

"Periodically I go in there and grab something, so it really shocked me," said customer Lisa Whitaker.

What shocked her was what she says she saw an employee do. "He went outside, fiddled with trash, came back in, didn't wash his hands, messing with food, outside smoking multiple cigarettes, back in, messing with food," Whitaker told us.

Whitaker called the Health Department, which sent an inspector the next day. The inspector did not note evidence of Whitaker's complaint, but did note 4 other critical violations, including employees touching ready-to-eat cheese slices and a hamburger bun with their bare hands.

We called the manager, who told us that employee was only wearing one glove and touched the food with wrong hand, but was immediately retrained. And as for Whitaker's complaint, the manager says kitchen video shows that worker washed their hands in a sink that a customer would not have been able to see.

What a burger corrected the problems and earned a perfect score on its next inspection. But the experience has led Whitaker to check restaurant inspections.

"I normally do, yes," she said. "And I watch your report every Thursday night."
