CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

James Holland is now the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisor's first African-American chairman.

The election of Holland was received with applause and praise by fellow board members at Wednesday's meeting.

Holland has been the center of controversy surrounding this role before.

In 2011, residents protested when Holland the former vice chair wasn't named the county's chairman.

Some residents believed race was a factor for the reason a tradition was broken and Holland was not put in charge then.

Holland was voted unanimously as chairman at Wednesday's meeting.

Following the vote, he thanked his board members for their leadership and integrity.
