Henrico mother calls Glen Allen school scare "worst nightmare"

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

A student is giving us a dramatic first-hand account of what happened as SWAT units went classroom to classroom after a scare at Glen Allen High School. Reports of a possibly armed, distraught student forced the school to go on lock down.

A 16 year old boy remained in custody Tuesday night. Police say there will be an increased presence on campus Wednesday.

"We looked outside and all the cop cars were outside," said student Libby Baughan. "We are like oh my gosh--are we going to get out of here?!"

The teenagers, in some cases, seemed eerily calm as officers with guns stood just steps away.

"In my classroom we were all freaked out," said Libby.

A student at Glen Allen HS took video as SWAT members entered their classroom. We're told, "They asked if the boy they were looking for was in our classroom and looked around. It was really scary for all of us, however, one of the SWAT guys had a bit of humor to lighten the mood by asking what subject we were in, and when we said French, he said "Oh oui! Merci beau coup!"

Teachers and students say they handled everything very well, and they knew they were in good hands.

Libby tweeted her mother saying she was afraid.

"I was scared for her," said Nancy Baughan. "As a parent that is one of your worst nightmares."

Police also blocked off access to a neighborhood on Old Springfield Road and Argonne Court while they did their investigation into the 16-year-old student in custody. But police are not confirming if the incident in the neighborhood is related to what happened at the high school.

The Baughan family lives off Argonne Court.

"It's not everyday you see that kind of activity going on," said Libby's brother Nick. "It's a shock."

Nick watched as police took the teen into custody. He couldn't help thinking about his sister at the high school.

"I thought I was going to have a heart attack," said Nick. "Anytime you have a loved one in that kind of situation that is all you think about."

Libby has known the juvenile likely at the center of all this since middle school.

"It seemed like he was fine," said Libby.

But now students say an ex-girlfriend who found a new boyfriend may have set the young teen off.

"It's just crazy to think it's all over a girl," said Libby.

School officials say professional counselors will be on standby if needed Wednesday.
