Winter storm bring cancellations and delays to Richmond Airport

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

If you have plans to travel over the next couple of days out of Richmond, remember to monitor your flight status from home before driving out to the airport - especially if you're traveling to the Northeast.

David Foster and his family have been trying to get back home to Chicago since Thursday.

"The weather, the snow in Chicago, our flights got canceled out of there that day, so we were booked on flights this morning, and we get here to check in to our flight to Atlanta and then connecting to Chicago, only to find out our Atlanta to Chicago arm was canceled without our knowledge, so it looks like we are going to be in Virginia for a couple more days," said Foster.

Several arriving flights, as well as some of the departures at RIC, are listed as canceled. Travelers say its all because of nasty weather coming out of the Northeast. 25 out of the 150 flights scheduled in and out of the Richmond Airport were canceled because of bad weather.

Airport administrators say that people with canceled or delayed flights usually stay at nearby hotels with family or wait it out at the airport. They say that airlines are not held responsible for flights canceled because of weather conditions and it's up to travelers to make alternate arrangements.

"Well, we tried to change the flight reservation in anticipation of the storm, but the airline doesn't allow you to do that until they start canceling flights, and I think this is actually our fourth re-booking. I'm getting less and less hopeful," said Robert Campolattaro.

As a Christmas present, Campolattaro planned a getaway trip to New York for his friend Diana.

"Yesterday, he had to tell me that the surprise trip might not happen, because we were supposed to head to New York. He has a few things planned that I still don't know and its kind of sad," said Diana.
