RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A former Richmond City employee pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $1,000 from the Department of Social Services.

According to a report from the City Auditor, Social Services employee Monica Davis admitted to taking 11 Wal-Mart gift cards from a safe and using them for her own benefit. Social Services keeps the gift cards on hand to give out to families who need to buy food or clothing.

The Richmond Times Dispatch reports that Davis no longer works for the city. She pled guilty to a felony charge of embezzlement by a public official. She was sentenced to two years in prison, all of it suspended, and she was ordered to repay the City in full.
