MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK: Spend your holiday cash on January deals

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Billions of dollars worth of gift cards were sold over the last few months, but the stores can't count them as sales until you redeem them. So, retailers want to you spend them as soon as possible.

The first of the year is synonymous with new goals, like losing weight, which is why almost everything associated with fitness will be on sale. Look for 30 to 70 percent off home gym equipment, exercise DVDs and apparel.

Need a new couch? Go look this month. Furniture retailers debut new models twice a year: once in August, once in February. Stores need to clear floor space and will slash prices to do it.

W-2s should be in by the end of January and the cost of tax software will begin to drop, usually about 40 percent off retail. Typically, you'll see even deeper discounts closer to April 15, but be careful, this didn't happen last year.

Due to demand, prices on items like jewelry can inch upward as we get closer to February 14. Smart shoppers plan ahead for Valentine's Day by making their purchases early.

Superbowl 48 is on February 2. The usual push for TV sales begins now. Look for smoking hot deals all month.

The Consumer Electronics Show happens next week. This is where all the latest and greatest products debut. Pay attention to what is there. 2014 models of products like cameras and tablets will put the 2013 versions on the sale block.

Carpet layers were busy refurbishing floors for all those holiday get togethers. Now the rush is over, so you'll find excellent deals on carpets and other flooring.

If adventure is calling you, get it for less. January is the time when boats and motorcycles are at some of their lowest prices of the year.

If you're looking for a new smartphone, experts say the deals will be better next month. Same goes for many summer accessories, like gas grills, air conditioning units and bicycles.
