Early morning fire destroys Petersburg home

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) -

Petersburg Fire crews started the new year trying to contain a massive blaze that destroyed a two-story home.

Crews were called to 1320 Custer Street around 3:21 a.m. when a woman headed to work noticed her neighbor's home on fire.

The blaze quickly devoured the home, sending flames and smoke into the air. At one point, they could be seen up to two miles away.

Crews worked to protect two nearby homes where five adults were living. They all escaped without injures and there was minimal damage to the homes. Crews were able to get the fire under control in about 15 minutes.

The vacant home had been under construction for about six months, officials said. They value the home at around $100,000. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
