First Night Northampton draws big crowds in frigid weather

The year is ending and the new year is beginning, both with some very cold temperatures.

But, that did not stop the crowds from showing up for First Night Northampton.

Excitement was high for a group of over 30 people from West Springfield. Young and old were on hand for the 29th First Night celebration.

"Everybody bringing their kids, having a great time," said Julienne Paglia. "We just came from Osaka and had a great dinner. We're going to go watch the fireworks and spend the new year together."

"It's great that there's a lot of different venues and a lot of variety," said Brittany Ankiewicz, a dancer at one of the First Night venues. "People can go and choose where they want to hang out with family and friends. It's a wonderful idea."

Ankiewicz was attending her second First Night. The Holyoke resident was ready to take in the sights after performing early in the evening. She said it is hard for any family to pass up what Northampton has to offer.

"It says it's a good community with everyone getting together, celebrating and having a good time together," said Ankiewicz.

While fireworks lit up the night sky, they did not provide a heating source. Those in attendance did not seem phased by extremely cold temperatures.

"We're all bundled up, the cold can't even bother us," said Paglia. "More layers, coats, hats, mittens, down coats, it doesn't matter. The cold can't keep us away."
