Hundreds make last minute donations for end of year tax benefit

Posted: Updated:

You need to hurry if you plan on making year-end donations to help a family in need and get a nice tax benefit.

April Digirolamo understands the importance of donating to charity. She and her husband are busy, as foster parents, and have a lot to give.

"We know the importance of giving back, and so when our kids get new toys, we decide to the ones that are still in good shape to collect them and donate them to Goodwill so that others can put them to good use," April Digirolamo said.

People who donate items or make monetary contributions before midnight Tuesday night can reap the benefits by deducting the donation from their earnings on their 2013 taxes.

"We appreciate their intent," said Lou Mazzini with The Salvation Army. "The generosity will go a long way. We always say, at the Salvation Army, we spend every dollar two or three times."

Tax preparer say that the donation ticket is the most important thing you need in order to get the benefit on your 2013 taxes.

"The last three to four days of the year is incredible. Of course, what folks are thinking about, of course, they want to clear out their clutter... but its also a chance to have an impact on their 2013 tax return," Ellen Thornhill with Goodwill said.

Janet Condrey makes the trip to donate every year around this time.

"It helps the community, but it also helps with my taxes, so it's a win-win situation, and I like to shop here sometimes, because you can get some really good bargains," said Condrey.

It's not too late to make monetary donations online:
