Disputanta man dies from injuries in deer hunting accident

A Disputanta man has died after he was shot while hunting deer in Sussex.

Thomas Michael Harris, 61, was shot in the head with shotgun pellets Monday while out with the Running Dogs hunt club, according to the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Harris was wearing blaze orange, but was shot by another hunter who was aiming for a running deer.

Harris was taken to VCU Medical Center where he passed away Tuesday morning.

The incident is currently under investigation and no charges have been filed.

Officials say this is the 20th accident of the hunting season.
