AU football team, Gov. Bentley meet before BCS trip

AUBURN, AL (WSFA) -

There's just one week separating the No. 2 ranked Auburn Tigers from the No. 1 ranked Florida State Seminoles as both prepare to play for the national title.

Before the Tigers head west, however, they got a pep talk from Alabama Governor Robert Bentley.

While Gov. Bentley says his schedule won't allow for him to attend the game, he did want to let the players know he's cheering them on.

Bentley addressed the team Monday telling them not only do they represent Auburn University but the entire state of Alabama. He said it has been amazing to watch the Tigers transform from a team that went from 3-9 last year to this year playing for the national title.

The Tigers' turnaround reminded him of his race for governor as he quizzed them on the 2010 election. "I started the race at 2 percent," Bentley said. "Won at 60 percent."

Gov. Bentley said regardless of whether the Tigers bring home the crystal trophy, he wanted them to know he was proud of the accomplishments they've made.

Bentley says he predicts Auburn will make it an unprecedented five national championships in a row for the state. (Auburn won in 2010 and in-state rival Alabama won in 2009, 2011 and 2012.)

The governor singled out quarterback Nick Marshall and running back Tre Mason during his visit and even drew a few laughs from the players as he explained that even he hasn't figured out the offense.

The governor got a few more laughs from the team when he said he reads wide receiver Sammy Coates' tweets.

As a token of appreciation, the football team presented the governor with a football all the players have signed.
