RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A Richmond tow-truck driver continues to recover in the hospital after being shot on the job Sunday afternoon.

Richmond Police believe the man was shot during an attempted robbery at Stonewall Avenue and 21st Street, near the Riverside Apartments. Two suspects are still at large.

The driver's wife hopes people will help find the men who did this, but she's also looking for the woman who helped save her husband's life.

Just before the street became a crime scene on Sunday, the man driving the ATC Towing truck called his wife. The second call tore their world apart.

"Within 10 minutes, I got the phone call. He was screaming, 'I'd been shot!' and the phone went dead," says the wife. She does not want to be identified, because the two men responsible have not been caught.

The driver was shot twice in the leg. Doctors hope he will walk again. His wife says it was a woman driving by who saved her husband's life.

"Ms. Dorothy, she's my guardian angel," she said. "She witnessed everything that happened, and ran to his side. They were actually over top of him when she jumped out of the car and started towards them."

ATC Towing owner, Thomas Norby, stopped operations for a day so company employees could be there for the family. The injured driver has five children, ranging from two to 12-years-old.

"He comes to work every day, wanting to work. Even on days he's off, he offers to work," said Norby.

The family is thankful for that support, but they are also looking for the woman who helped the injured driver. They only know her name is 'Ms. Dorothy.'

"Me and my children and my family, we thank you and we would love to meet you in person," the wife said.

Police say the suspect descriptions are vague, but if you know anything, call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.

The family says they do not have health insurance but have been told workman's comp will help take care of some of the medical expenses.
