Firefighters battled an apartment fire in Henrico's West End, around 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
Henrico fire responded to a fire in the 8700 block of Pellington Place. No one was home in the apartment at the time of the fire. Six adults and four children were displaced.
First responding crews noticed smoke coming from the bedroom window, at the rear of the apartment. The apartment building suffered smoke damage, and a small amount of water damage. No other apartment complex was damaged.
From a distance it looks like any other building in the complex but a closer look at the windows and the back side of the building you can see smoke stains on paneling.
Crews worked quickly to put a fire that initially forced more than 20 people out of their homes leaving half of those without shelter. Tracy Lewis was woken up by her son.
"I thought he was telling me there was a fire in this building," Lewis said.
That fire was not in Tracy's building, but a stone's throw away from where she and her family slept.
"We went out onto the balcony and we saw that the building across the street was on fire so we came back in and just through clothes because we didn't know how the fire would spread it was really a big fire," Lewis said.
Charred remains from a top level apartment now litter the ground blocking the door to this maintenance service shed. crews worked Saturday morning to board up windows and service several homes that were damaged by smoke.
Anthony Cooper says he too was woken up by the sound of fire alarms.
"It was at least about three trucks out here in the middle of the night around 1 in the morning I've never seen anything like this and I've been here since September," Cooper said.
Henrico fire officials say no one was injured in the fire. Tracy says its a silver lining in what could have been a more devastating situation.
"At the end of the day even if you have lost your possessions you still have your life."
The Richmond area Red Cross tell us that they have been in touch with at least one of the families that were displaced that being a mother and her two children.
