Donations overwhelm Richmond typhoon survivors

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

We first told you about the Richmond family who survived that massive typhoon in the Philippines. They have been slammed with a flood of donations. The Marcelino family now says they simply can't afford to ship all of the food and clothing.

"I'm overwhelmed," said Dr. Victoria Marcelino. "I never expected this. This is a blessing from God."

Her daughter started collected donations when the typhoon hit.

"I think I outdid myself with donations and stuff," said Jewelle Marcelino-Basco who could not reach for her parents for 5 days during the height of the storm. "Everybody was asking me how can they help me, and I was just like maybe I will just put a box together."

The family needs to ship 150 boxes. The cost of shipping is at least $9,000. That doesn't including storage, but the folks at Happy Box Storage are offering $400 a month in free storage space.

"As long as I have space available and there is not a customer needing this space right now," said storage facility manager Dan Primeau. "It is fine with me. It is a very important need, and I'm glad we could help."

Primeau has been inspired by the countless volunteers who have come to pack boxes and wanted to do his part.

"It's a burden that I have," said Primeau. "I want to help people in the Philippines , and I only have so many finances that I can give."

The family's go fund me page has raised a little more than $400, but they haven't given up hope. They know these donations will make a big difference.
