12 On Your Side: Henrico man says he was sold a fake diamond ring

12 On Your Side is looking into a call from a Henrico man who says a ring he got as a Christmas present is a fake.

Dewitte Mangum's wife purchased the ring seven years ago from Schwarzschild Jewelers during a liquidation sale.  The band recently broke and when they tried to get it fixed, a jeweler told the couple: these diamonds are not real.

The company that now owns Schwarzschild Jewelers did not own it when this couple bought that ring. But the current owners still have the Schwarzschild name and when NBC12 told them this story, they immediately took action.

The price for the ring was $1,130, but the deal was for half off at Schwarzschild Jewelers.  Dewitte and Erlyne Mangum thought they were getting a good Christmas deal.

"I had diamonds and I wanted my husband to have diamonds from me," says Erlyene.

Dewitte wore the ring for seven year until the band broke.  The couple took it to a jeweler to get it fixed, but he told them these diamonds are fake.

"I don't like fakes! I like things for real," says Dewitte.

Schwarzschild confirmed the ring isn't real.  Dewitte says a manager at the time told him since he bought the ring under the old ownership he could get a replacement, but at a discounted price.  That didn't sit well with Dewitte.

"They are responsible for anything that name markets because they own that name!" says Dewitte.

Schwarzschild is now owned by Schiffman Jewelers, a family owned business that's been around for more than a hundred years.  They bought Schwarzschild a few months after the Mangums bought this ring. When NBC12 told the owner this story, he immediately took action.

"I'm really sorry that this happened although we couldn't have done anything about it, it wasn't a part of our company at the time," says Lane Schiffman, co-owner of Schwarzchild, a subsidiary of Schiffman Jewelers. "We're going to move heaven and earth to make sure he's pleased."

On Monday afternoon, the Mangums were back at Schwarzschild in Short Pump picking out a new ring this time with real diamonds.

"If he [the manager] follows through with what he says here, I'm satisfied with that," says Dewitte.

Schiffman also has some advice for anyone looking to buy some bling.

"They should have their jewelry checked out and appraised by a certified gemologist, someone that is in the American Gem Society," he said.  Schiffmans says all jewelry should come with documentation and proper appraisal documents.
