Virginia Credit Union sending out 15K notices after Target data breach

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Target is now apologizing and offering customers a 10 percent discount this weekend. The move comes after a massive credit card breach.

The Virginia Credit Union just sent out notices to thousands of impacted members.

Target confirms 40 million credit and debit accounts may have gotten into the hands of cyber crooks between November 27th and December 15th.

We spoke to shoppers who say they have been discouraged or prevented from going inside the store to cancel their accounts. They say they have been told to call an 800 number instead. The Virginia Credit Union says they are sending out notices to 15,000 members.

"As this incident progresses we may learn of more," said Glenn Birch with Virginia Credit Union. "But at this point that is the number that we are contacting."

The credit union has even placed an alert on their website that urges customers to monitor their accounts and consider changing their pins.

"Should people just replace their credit and debit cards?" we asked

"What we are recommending is for people to look for the notification from their financial institution," said Birch. "We are contacting our members who have been impacted, and we are doing that right away."

We also stopped by the Virginia Association of Community Banks. The association is comprised of 90 banks from across the state.

"It's going to be a problem," said Steve Yeakel with VACB. "It's a bad time of year, but we feel like we are in a position to help folks make the best of it."

Target says they will also offer free credit monitoring. You can report any unauthorized activity to Target at 866-852-8680.
