12 INVESTIGATES: VA private college presidents' pay

The list is in of the 500 top paid private college presidents in 2011. The Chronicle of Public Education created this database. The organization does this once a year.

The highest paid private college president in Virginia is Washington and Lee's Kenneth Ruscio. His total compensation was $922,542 in 2011.

Ruscio is followed by University of Richmond President Edward Ayers. He was ranked 68th on the list. His total compensation in 2011 was $836,289. His base pay was $469,021.

Virginia Union's president, Claude Perkins raked in around $381,000 in total compensation. He's followed closely by Randolph Macon College President, Robert Lingren, who pulled in $379,571.

So how does this compare with a public school? The largest in our area is Virginia Commonwealth University. Michael Rao's total annual compensation sits at around $800,000. his base pay this year was $503,155.
