Governor McDonnell's indictment still a real possibility

A bombshell story by the Washington Post reveals the governor's legal troubles are far from over.

According to the post, Governor Bob McDonnell was just hours away from being charged with a federal crime.

But the governor's lawyers intervened successfully delaying an indictment.

Sources tell The Washington Post, The U.S. Attorney's Office was prepared to ask a grand jury to send up the indictment of the governor and his wife, Maureen, no later than this past Monday.

McDonnell's legal team successfully convinced them to hold things off.

The governor's attorneys told federal prosecutors that an indictment at this time would interrupt the transition of power to the incoming McAuliffe administration.

They also argued that the reliability of some of their witnesses were questionable.

The argument was enough for prosecutors to hold off on charges for now, but not forever.

According to The Washington Post,  it won't happen before January 2, 2014.

It could take until February before there is complete resolution.

This all tracks back to McDonnell's relationship with Star Scientific CEO, Jonnie Williams. The investigation is into whether McDonnell and his wife illegally promoted the supplement company in exchange for hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts and loans.
