Obenshain concedes, Herring to be next Virginia AG

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Republican State Sen. Mark Obenshain conceded the Virginia attorney general's race in a press conference in Richmond Wednesday afternoon.

With the concession, Democrat Mark Herring can now become the next Attorney General of Virginia. He will lead law enforcement efforts in the Commonwealth.

"I'm confident the final total today is going to show Mark Herring ahead," Obenshain said in his announcement.

Obenshain battled Herring through a contentious campaign which led to the tightest statewide contest ever in Virginia in November. Obenshain said he called Herring earlier Wednesday to congratulate him on his victory.

As the recount progressed this week Herring's lead grew over Obenshain, though it was still an extremely slim margin with just an 866 vote lead after 73 percent of the recount complete.
