Restaurant closes to make way for more parking at Staples Mill Amtrak station

Additional parking is finally coming to the Staples Mill Amtrak Station, but a family-owned restaurant will be torn down to make room.

Anthony & George's Restaurant has been serving customers for 20 years. Co-owner Marianna Maratos says she just told her employees and customers this weekend the restaurant is closing.

For two decades, there haven't been many changes at the family owned place. It has had the same owner and many employees have worked here for more than ten years, including cousins Dreama Adams and Barbara Warrington.

"They're nice people to work for," says Warrington.  "Family oriented which you don't find a lot today."

Right now, there are far more cars than parking spaces at the train station and it's getting worse as more people ride the rails.

Maratos says they sold the restaurant's one-acre lot to the Virginia Department of Transportation.  She says it's been tough to close the restaurant her family has owned since day one.

"It's going to be so hard to change that routine, you know, after 20 years of doing the same thing over and over again," she said.

Maratos says the last meal will be served December 31.

"We're going to just keep moving ahead. We got our memories for here, so we'll hold them to our heart," says Warrington.

Twenty years worth of memories that won't be forgotten any time soon.

Maratos says customers need to know if you have a gift certificate to the restaurant it's best to redeem it now. She also says the family is looking to buy another building and hoping to open up soon.

The price for the lot is not being released right now and the building could come down as soon as the end of January.
