HANOVER, VA (WWBT) -

A man and woman broke into cars in gym parking lots in Hanover stealing purses and other valuables, according to officials.

When Amaris Franklin first heard there were two suspects on the loose wanted for smashing out car windows in Hanover, she immediately told authorities the same thing happened to her and another woman at a gym in Colonial Heights.

What alerted Franklin was checks stolen from the other victim's car had recently been written in Hanover. This lead her to believe these were the same people.

"They are smashing windows, they are taking advantage of the fact that women leave purses in their cars, in the gym, and they really had a good advantage because the light was off," said Franklin.

The suspect left Franklin's passenger window shattered. Her purse and wallet were both taken.

"I walked around, and my heart just dropped into my stomach because I was just like, 'Not me, this couldn't be me,'" said Franklin.

Lieutenant Chris Whitley with the Hanover Sheriff's office says last month, three vehicles were broken into between 5:30 PM and 7 PM. They say one happened in the parking lot near a Gold's Gym and two others off Rutland center boulevard near a YMCA.

Authorities say another happened again just last week in the same area. Franklin has since had her window replaced. She is warning others to be on the look out.

"Put your purse in the trunk before you go where you are going to. Put it in the trunk before, because they are watching you," Franklin said.

Authorities believe the suspects are driving a black Dodge Dart or some type of SUV with dark-tinted windows. If you have any information on these crimes or the whereabouts of these individuals, call Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.
