RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A crime spree around the Broad Street corridor has business owners on high alert. Burglars hit Martin's Car Care and Manchester Gardening/Petres Inc early Wednesday morning.

According to the stores owners', the burglars made away with several high-priced items and some bizarre items, too.

Bill Clark owns Martin's Car Care. He says over the past year, his auto shop has been burglarized three times. This time, the thief or thieves knew exactly what to look for.

"To a regular old Joe, he wouldn't know what this is right here but to a thief this is gold," said Clark. Clark is talking about his $13,000 diagnostic scanner that was stolen.

The scanner is used to determine car troubles and he says, it can sell for hundreds on the black market.

Now, Clark says, he's investing in an alarm system. "I am most definitely getting an alarm system. Strike three, I'm out!"

Next door, Randy Petres' office was broken into at the same time as Clark's. He says, the thieves took construction equipment, cell phones and strangely enough, rolls of toilet paper.

"It didn't look like they were looking for anything in particular except for grab and go," says Petres.

Clark and Petres believe the same burglars who hit their shops also broke into a nearby Allen Tire on West Broad Street.

Those thieves were caught on surveillance cameras using stolen gift cards at another business.

Richmond police are investigating if the crimes are connected. Henrico and Chesterfield police are working to see if the Allen Tire burglary is also tied to crimes committed in Chesterfield County.
