Anti-casino group wants gaming commissioner to recuse himself from MGM vote

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Springfield's anti-casino group Citizens Against Casino Gaming wants state Gaming Commissioner Bruce Stebbins to recuse himself from a vote regarding MGM's suitability to build a resort casino in the city's South End.

The group sent a letter to the commission saying Stebbins' previous positions with the city, including working as the business development director and a city councilor, make it impossible for him to be impartial.

The commission sent CBS 3 this statement in response:

"Commissioner Stebbins has complete confidence in his ability to conduct himself impartially. All members of the commission have a strong commitment to transparency and integrity and will continue to apply those standards to every decision made."

The commission is expected to issue a determination on MGM's suitability to build an $800 million resort casino in the coming days.

The fate of an iconic landmark in one western Massachusetts town is in jeapordy.    The old train depot in East Longmeadow near the center of town is a very familiar sight to residents.  Built in 1876, it's image even adorns the town seal.   However, the fate of the land it sits on is up in the air, and so is the future of the depot.
