Volunteer firefighters collect donations for Ashland family after weekend house fire

A Hanover county family that lost everything in a fire over the weekend is getting help from the firefighters who put out the blaze.

Tina Sharpe and her family were sleeping in their home on Ashcake Road in Ashland when a fire broke out just after 6 a.m. Sunday morning. They were alerted to the fire by one of the family dogs.

"She licked the whole side of my face, and I sat up in the bed and I looked and I couldn't see anything because there was so much smoke," said Sharpe.

They got out with only the clothes on their backs. Now the Ashland volunteer firefighters who put out the fire have decided to step in to help a family they've never met - a family that includes two small children who no longer have Christmas presents.

Firefighters are asking for donations of clothing and toys to help out. They even set up a relief fund to help the Sharpes.

"This was very emotional for us when we saw the impact to the family," said volunteer firefighter James Munsey.

Tina Sharpe says the firefighters may never realize just how much their generosity means to her family. They're currently living in a hotel. In just a few short days, they'll have no place to go.

"It's hard to say something to somebody that's helping your family at Christmas, just thank you. I wish I could say something else," said Sharpe.

"It wasn't a matter of knowing them, it was just knowing the situation and that we might be able to do something to organize help for them," said Munsey.

There is no deadline on donations. They say as long as donations come in, they will accept then on behalf of the family.
