MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK: PriceBlink's "lower price" claim

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - PriceBlink is not a download nor an executable computer file - it is a browser add-on, an extension that will "automatically find lower prices while you shop" online.

Once it's added to your web browser, it will automatically search for lower prices anytime you click an item on a retailer's product page.

After I added PriceBlink to my Google Chrome browser, I shopped a Samsung Galaxy tablet on BestBuy.com. Best Buy's price:  $299.99.

But at the top of my browser, PriceBlink popped up a yellow bar, announcing it found the tablet someplace else for $249.

I clicked "Compare Prices," and PriceBlink revealed three retailers, including Target and Office Depot, with the lower price. Each retailer confirmed it had the product in stock and at the price advertised.

Shopping an XBox One console on ToysRUs.com revealed another feature of PriceBlink.

ToysRUs.com offered the console with a Call of Duty Ghosts bundle for $619.97. PriceBlink could not find a lower price, but it revealed a ToysRUs online coupon worth 15 percent off anything $100 or more, plus free shipping. When I clicked "Reveal Code," PriceBlink captured and provided the coupon code, then automatically copied it to my computer's clipboard for an easy cut-and-paste at checkout.

PriceBlink saved me nearly $100 on the gaming console and scored me free shipping.

It never requests registration, so PriceBlink's privacy is solid -- you never give it any of your personal information. It's never actually installed on your computer, so there's virtually no virus or malware risk either.

But PriceBlink does have its limitations.

I found a treadmill on DicksSportingGoods.com for $999.99. PriceBlink claimed it found a better deal at SearsOutlet.com for $849.93.

But when I clicked over to the Sears site, it said delivery was not available for the treadmill at that price.

PriceBlink's founder Karl Quist also admitted its price comparisons include preferred retailers who pay to be promoted on PriceBlink.

"The vast majority of our retailers do pay us," he said. "But we include the best price available regardless."

There's no cost or risk, so it's worth giving PriceBlink a try. It's recommended for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.
