VCU to celebrate Nelson Mandela at campus event

RICHMOND, Va. (Dec. 10, 2013) – Virginia Commonwealth University will hold a celebration of the life of Nelson Mandela on Wednesday.

"VCU Celebrates the Life of Nelson Mandela" will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the University Commons Theater, 907 Floyd Ave. The event, which is open to the public, is sponsored by the Black Education Association, the Office of Global Education and the Department of African American Studies.

The celebration will feature speakers who will reflect on Mandela's life and his far-reaching impact. The event also will include poetry and music.

Scheduled speakers include Blue Wooldridge, D.P.A, professor in the Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs; Tawnya Pettiford-Wates, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Theater in the School of the Arts; McKenna Brown, executive director of Global Education in the School of World Studies, part of the College of Humanities and Sciences; Aashir Nasim, Ph.D., chair of the Department of African American Studies, part of the College of Humanities and Sciences; Christopher Brooks, Ph.D., professor of anthropology in the School of World Studies; Wanda Mitchell, Ed.D, vice president for inclusive excellence at VCU; and Cynthia Newbille, Ph.D., who represents the East End 7th District on the Richmond City Council.
