Henrico Fire Department, VDOT prepare for winter storm

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

As a winter storm prepares to hit Central Virginia, the Henrico Fire Department and VDOT are prepared to greet it head on.

Over at Station Four in Varina, they were busy checking their equipment before it's needed during an emergency call.

"Weather has an impact as far as the inconvenience it places on us to be able to respond to emergencies quickly," said Battalion Chief Cricket Gerald with the Henrico Fire Department.

He says, they prepare for storms 72-hours in advance. Each fire engine and vehicle is equipped with a chainsaw to cut through downed trees that may block their path to someone in need.

Meanwhile, over at VDOT's service shop, the mechanics are on-call all weekend.

"We've got guys who are trained to work on any equipment that breaks down at any given time," said Jerry Slagle, VDOT's Equipment Repair Manager.

Still, the storm will be a moving target for VDOT who says, the mixed bag of wintry weather poses a challenge.

"When you have all of that mixed together over a 24-hour period and you're really not certain where that's all going to fall, it makes it difficult," said Dawn Eischen, VDOT spokeswoman. "It's difficult to figure out where you need to put your resources ahead of time. So we're really monitoring this storm closely."

The Henrico Fire Department urges people to also prepare before the storm. Stock up on food essentials, have an emergency kit ready and stay off the roads Sunday morning.
