A cough is considered chronic is one that lasts for 8 weeks or more.
There could be many causes: smoking; allergies; postnasal drip and certain medicines.
Asthma and heartburn could also be to blame. In some cases there may be a more serious underlying condition such as a malignancy, tuberculosis, pneumonia or other airway disease.
