Alpha Phi Alpha of Springfield gives turkeys to those in need

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha were in the giving mood Saturday morning near the campus of American International College.

The group teamed up with Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority to hand out more than 100 Thanksgiving baskets to families in need.

This is the 31st year the Alpha Phi Alpha held the turkey giveaway.

They said it is a great way for them to demonstrate what brotherhood is all about.

"Our goal is to provide service to the community, and so this is our way of giving back to the community," said Eddie Lee, the fraternity's president. "It's a great feeling, families have been very appreciative very thankful. It's a good feeling to provide a Thanksgiving meal to a family in Springfield."

This year, the turkey basket give away was named in honor of Lavalle Smith, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha who recently passed away and was instrumental in making the annual event happen.
