We explain why in this week's Neighborhood Healthwatch.

Dr. Larry Benson is a sports medicine physician who treats mallet or baseball finger.

This is  an injury to the fingertip caused by a direct blow to the end of the finger. If this is not treated in a timely manner, it may result in surgical intervention or permanent dysfunction and disfigurement of the finger.

The finger is usually placed in a special kind of splint for 4-6 weeks.

The splint should not come off during that time. Ice should also be applied several times a day for 20 minutes at a time.
