VSU students react to allegations surrounding football team
PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) -
VSU students react to the blame being placed on Virginia State and its football players and the disappointment they feel over the championship game's cancellation.
Many students had plans to travel to North Carolina to watch the game Saturday. Shuttle buses had been booked to take groups South.
"I'm pretty upset," said VSU junior Anthony Commodore. "I really was looking forward to driving down to the game."
"I feel like every time we are up something drags us back down," said VSU junior Jared Thompson. "We were starting to feel the unity on campus."
Other students were more concerned with the media attention VSU has been getting so far this year. "We've been getting too many bad news stories at VSU as a whole," said VSU senior Jessica Smith. "When it's not like that as a school at all."
In April, two VSU students drowned after four men who didn't have any university affiliation pressured the college freshman to cross the rushing Appomattox River.
Then, a VSU student was charged in October for stabbing someone during a homecoming event, which put the campus on lockdown. Now, these latest allegations.
VSU students are standing by their team but say, the football player or players responsible for attacking the WSSU quarterback should be held accountable though they feel the whole team is being punished right now.
