HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - It's a unique approach to bring new life to Eastern Henrico - and even area businesses are buying in! Henrico County is preparing to unveil brand new banners with several creative designs in hopes of re-energizing Highland Springs. NBC 12 got a sneak peek at the new designs.
This is more than just another county project, organizers say it is a mission to restore pride and revitalize this part of Eastern Henrico.
"The town has been here since the 1890's," said Mark Romers with the Eastern Henrico Business Association.
But a part of the county with so much history has somewhere along the way dimmed it's once shining light Romers said.
"We somewhat feel like were left behind or people view us differently than other parts of the county or region," he added.
That's why his group is now trying to re-market the area as a great place to live, work, and play.
"There's a little bit of being a little down trodden over the time and we want to bring these banners back, they were there 20 years ago," he explained.
NBC 12 got a first look at the brand new banners - a few dozen will soon go up along Nine Mile Road - all promoting the best of Highland Springs.
Area businesses put up $2500 to make this happen. Henrico Government paid $5500.
"I think it's going to bring some life and draw some attention to the corridor," said Tyrone Nelson with the Board of Supervisors.
He immediately saw the vision and got to work to partner with the business sector.
"Sometimes it's challenging when you solely try to depend on the government to do things and I think sometimes the burden should be shared," Nelson added.
Now the community is rallying to raise the remaining $3500 balance, an investment Romers believes will be well worth every penny.
"It's going to add really nice color and hopefully inspire the citizens of the community to move forward with other revitalization projects," Romers said.
Planning this has been a year in the making, now it's finally coming to light with those new banners expected to go up next month.
