UPDATE: Police say 12-year-old made up abduction attempt story

Henrico Police now say that the 12-year-old claiming a man tried to abduct him made the story up.

The child originally told police a man offered him money for help finding a puppy, then tried to grab him when he ran away.

The boy's mom only spoke to NBC12. Reporter Jessica Jaglois knocked on the family's front door just as he was confessing to Henrico police that the story wasn't true.

While his mother didn't want to go on camera, she was distraught that her son's fabrication had gotten so much media attention. Still, she eluded that there may be other issues her son is dealing with.

To that, Henrico police confirm their investigation will continue, just not of an attempted abduction.

Meanwhile, the boy's neighbors are breathing a sigh of relief that a kidnapper isn't on the loose.

"If you want to strike fear in the heart of a parent or grandparent just say 'child abduction,'" said Doris Banks with the Neighborhood Watch. "Now, I'm relieved.

"I was terrified," said Ashlee McQueen, who lives with her three young stepsons. "Naturally, you're going to be cautious with your children but I can say I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders."

NBC12's legal analyst says, the boy could be charged with filing a false report but that it is unlikely.
