Plans for new stadium in Shockoe Bottom move forward

Plans for a new baseball stadium in Shockoe Bottom are already moving forward. The Richmond City Council said it would consider the Mayor's plan mere hours after he announced it to the public.

However, the public didn't get a chance to speak at the City Council meeting Monday night because the public hearing was postponed. It left opponents of the stadium in Shockoe Bottom wondering if the City wants to hear their input, or if this is a done deal.

City Council Vice President Ellen Robertson said, the public hearing and the agenda items dealing with the future of the Diamond were postponed because more details needed to be discussed.

Those details include, if the City will be able to allocate the land where the Diamond sits from the Richmond Metropolitan Authority.

Opponents of the new stadium say, the last-minute move is another ploy by the City to keep the public out of the way.

"They do these things behind closed doors and then bring them out as done deals while at the same time telling us that the community's input is very important," said protestor Ana Edwards.

City Council says it will consider the mayor's plan, which is the first step in the process moving forward. But will what is estimated to cost Richmond taxpayers $80 million both revitalize and preserve Shockoe Bottom?

Robertson says, that remains to be seen, but city council is ready to get on board if it can.

The mayor's plan goes before the land use, housing and finance committees next week and will come back to City Council for a public hearing on November 25.
