A Mechanicsville swim coach is accused of taking indecent liberties with a minor under his supervision.
23-year-old Tucker Smith was arrested Tuesday on two felony counts of indecent liberties with a child. Police say the offences took place in July and on October 30.
Smith worked for the Burkwood Aquatic Club. The BAC Board president said they learned of the misconduct on October 31 and terminated Smith immediately the next morning.
"Burkwood Aquatic Club takes the safety of the families in our program very seriously," said President Nikki Deal in an email. "Burkwood Aquatic Club also immediately contacted the Hanover County Sheriff's Department to report the misconduct."
Smith also worked as a lifeguard at the Patrick Henry Family YMCA between October 15 and October 30, according to the YMCA He is not a current YMCA of Greater Richmond employee.
Long-time members of BAC and friends of the Smith family say they are in shock.
"The Smith family is a pillar in the community and very active in our church," said Evan Fabricant, who says he attends church with Tucker Smith's parents. "They did everything they could to raise their boys the best way they could and I'm sure when all the facts come out people will understand the truth."
Smith will appear in a Hanover County courtroom on January 9 at 9:30am for his preliminary hearing.
