James River High School band receives rare state accomplishment

There must be something in the water when it comes to the musical talent in Chesterfield County.

James River High School recently scored Superior ratings for the 20th straight year at the state marching band competition, according to the band's communication director.

On October 26th, under the direction of Keith Cottrill, 95 members of the James River High School Regiment reported to Patriot High School in Nokesville, Virginia along with fifteen other high schools from across the state. All schools were performing for the annual VBODA Marching Band Assessment.

Every year for the past 19 years, The James River Regiment has succeeded in attaining the coveted Superior rating . This year proved no different. James River Regiment received Superior scores, from all judges. This marching assessment is the first component needed to attain the Virginia Honor Band Status. The second component occurs with a concert assessment in the spring.

The James River Regiment is one of only three high school marching bands in the Commonwealth of Virginia to maintain Honor Band status every year since inception, according to the band's communication director.
