Family forced to evacuate Chesterfield condo fire

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

A family is forced to evacuate their home after the condo next door catches fire.

The fire happened at a complex on East Briar Patch Road off Huguenot Road, near Chesterfield Towne Center around 2 a.m. Thursday.

Several viewers called the newsroom after seeing heavy smoke, and many people thought the smoke was actually coming from the mall.

The fire started in a storage unit in the back of a condo unit and quickly spread to the second floor. That unit was unoccupied but the condo next door had to be evacuated for minor smoke damage.

The family in that unit escaped unharmed. The fire department was able to get the fire under control in about 30 minutes.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
