Chesterfield man charged in string of Southside robbery attempts

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Police say it was a clerk's quick thinking that helped them catch a serial robber.

Robert Hylton is now in jail, accused of several robberies earlier this week in Chesterfield and Richmond.

The clerk, Apesh Patel, working at the Donut Connection on Hull Street Road said he was scared but tried to get a good look at the getaway car. On top of that, he has surveillance video that gives detectives a clear image of the suspect.

Surveillance video shows Patel giving the money to the robbery suspect. He said Hylton was hanging around outside the shop, then came in when no customers were around. Patel didn't see a weapon, but didn't want to take any chances.

"He's [said] give me all the money you got! I'm not joking! Otherwise I'll jump over the counter and knock you down," says Patel.  "I don't want him to break my jaw and get the bill for $5,000."

Hylton was arrested in Richmond shortly after the robbery at Donut Connection. He's also accused of robbing the Baskin Robbins on Forest Hill Avenue, the Martin's on Stony Point Road and the Family Dollar on Midlothian Turnpike.

Patel said his family has owned this shop on Hull Street Road for 20 years and had never dealt with a crime like this.
